Calm
A clean list, readable messages and gestures you already know. No feeds, no badges begging for attention.
Free and open source · Android
Loupe is a calm, fast mail app with desktop-class tools underneath: expression search, server-side rules, OpenPGP and S/MIME. It talks to your mail server and nobody else.

Why Loupe
The everyday stays quiet: read, reply, archive. The moment you need more, it's there, without a settings maze.
A clean list, readable messages and gestures you already know. No feeds, no badges begging for attention.
Expression search, Smart Mailboxes, Sieve rules, tags and keyboard shortcuts, the tools power users miss on mobile.
No Loupe servers in the middle. An encrypted store on the phone, remote images off, trackers unwrapped.
Why Loupe exists
The simple ones are lovely until you need a message from two years ago. The powerful ones bury the inbox under toolbars. And many sync your mailbox through servers of their own. Loupe refuses all three trade-offs.
| What you get | A typical phone mail app | Loupe |
|---|---|---|
| Badly formatted HTML mail | Shown as sent: pinch and pan | Rebuilt to fit the screen |
| Search | Keywords | A full boolean language: phone first, server after |
| Power features | A few, or a cluttered screen | Tags, rules, identities, saved searches and raw source, one long-press away |
| Protocols | IMAP | IMAP and JMAP, with Sieve rules on the server |
| Tracking | Images load, or go through a proxy | Remote images off, tracking pixels removed, links checked |
| Your mailbox | Often synced through the vendor's servers | Only on your phone and your mail server |
A comparison with common phone mail apps in general, not with any one app.
Loupe isn't trying to replace the mail client on your computer. It's for people who use Thunderbird or another desktop client and want the same power on the phone: the same tags, the same rules on the same server, and a QR code to bring accounts across.
Search
Pull down and type. Loupe understands fields, groups, dates and negation, shows results from the phone instantly, and streams in the rest from your server.
Save any search as a Smart Mailbox. It's stored on your own mail server, so it shows up on your other devices too, or make it a rule.
The search languageExample search: from:alice and (subject:invoice or body:"PO 123")
Groups, quotes and boolean logic, like a desktop client.
Example search: is:unread and newer_than:7d and -tag:newsletter
Status, relative dates and tags, negated with a minus.
Example search: f:github.com s:"pull request" is:unreplied
Short forms for fast typing; save it as a Smart Mailbox.

Readable mode
Desktop-sized HTML becomes a clean, legible page. Footers shrink to fine print, photo grids become a carousel, and dark mode fixes the colours that would disappear.
Everything else
HTML mail rebuilt to fit your screen: real text sizes, footers as fine print, photos in a swipeable carousel.
Chips or typed queries like from:alice and is:unread. Results from the phone appear at once, the server streams in after.
Saved searches stored on your own mail server, so they follow you to every device.
Turn any search into a rule. Run it on the phone, or as Sieve on your server so it works while you sleep.
Every newsletter by sender, with read rates and a one-tap unsubscribe centre that runs on your phone.
Snoozed mail lives in a folder on your server, so other clients that follow the convention see it too.
Take back a message in the first seconds, or write now and send tomorrow at nine.
Encrypt and sign with either standard. OpenPGP works with Thunderbird and Autocrypt.
Suspicious links and look-alike domains are flagged, with the reason in plain words.
Accept, Maybe or Decline right above the message, with both time zones when they differ.
Any IMAP provider with autoconfig, plus native JMAP for Fastmail and Stalwart.
Three panes, keyboard shortcuts, drag and drop, and a command palette on Ctrl+K.
Privacy
Your phone talks to your mail server, directly. Loupe has no backend to breach, no analytics to opt out of, and nothing to sell.

Built in the open
Every line is public under the MPL-2.0. Nightly builds come straight from GitHub Actions, so what you install is what you can read.
Loupe is free. If it earns a place on your phone, pay what you want, and help keep the nightly builds coming.
